US Surgeon-General Vivek Murthy’s suggestion that alcoholic beverages now include cancer-warning labels, just as cigarettes do, adds to what doctors have been saying for a long time. That there is no “safe” level of alcohol consumption when it comes to cancer risk.
A study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that of the estimated 20,000 cancer deaths each year caused by alcohol use during 2020–2021, approximately 16,800 (83%) of them could have been prevented if adult drinkers had reduced their consumption to ≤2 drinks/day for men, or ≤1 drink/day for women.
